Lanka rejects LTTE’s ceasefire offer: Calls it a joke

An offer of an immediate unilateral ceasefire in the north by the beleaguered Tamil Tigers on Sunday was rejected by the Sri Lankan Government. The Media Centre for National Security in Colombo called the ceasefire announcement a gimmick.

Naxals strike on poll eve: Phase-II polling today 2,041 candidates

In a grim reminder of the violence during the first phase of Lok Sabha polls, Naxalites today, on the eve of the second round of voting tomorrow, tried to unleash a wave of terror in the states they are active in by hijacking a train carrying nearly 700 passengers in Jharkhand’s Latehar district, bombing a BDO’s office and killing a driver after setting ablaze several trucks in Bihar.

In a major shift of stand, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani has said for the first time that his party will not abrogate the civilian nuclear deal with the US if it is voted to power. The party had earlier vowed to kill the agreement, saying it compromised India’s strategic interests.

Polling begins in first phase of Lok Sabha elections

Staggered polling began in 124 constituencies for the first phase of elections across 15 states and two union territories to elect a new Lok Sabha as also legislative assemblies in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa amid tight security. As many as 1,715 candidates are in the fray in the first phase with the prominent names being RJD’s Lalu Prasad, Murli Manohar Joshi of BJP and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao.
